“What are your plans after 12th?”

“So what are your plans after 12th?
This must be the most bothersome question faced by students appearing for their 12th standard board examination. The students end up mumbling something like “Depends on the marks…” or “Not very sure as yet…
In truth, some of them are confused as hell and so are their parents! Navigating through the world of higher studies with the mind-boggling options and preparing for various entrance tests is indeed a daunting task.
Narrow down your search & PREPARE!!
The trick then is to narrow down the search for the perfect career option that is best suited for your personality type, interests, and talents. Most of us think that a career in Engineering, Business Management, Civil Services, Medical, Financial Planning or Law are the safest bet. And not everyone is cut out to learn and put it to practice if their interests lie elsewhere. Also, realistically these sought after fields that promise a very rewarding future can have the same amount of struggle period like any other profession.
It is important to conduct ‘S.W.O.T.’ analysis of yourself and your situation before you decide on anything that. You have to know yourself well to this exercise. Identify what are your Strengths & Weaknesses are. Do you have liking and aptitude for subjects that are technical? Are you good in some Art form or are you good at Languages? Do you like crunching numbers or love taking care of the financial aspect of any business? Or are you imaginative, intuitive, observant and empathetic which makes you more suited for a Design field? So it is important to start with knowledge about yourself and what you are special talents.
For any kind of career that you wish to pursue, good communication & presentation skills are vital to survival in this competitive world. So brush up on these skills or find yourself a mentor from whom you can learn these skills. Build a positive mindset and imbibe in yourself qualities of being a great team player as inculcate leadership qualities that can make you an empowering leader of your team. Read business magazines, online and offline that tell you about the current business environment.
No Pain No Gain
Solely focusing on the financial payoff delivered by pursuing a particular profession is not a good strategy to follow. There are plenty of Engineers in India who get pressured into joining Engineering only to realize that they will never become top rate engineers and never had an interest in the field in the first place. So to save on time and a possible heartache what courses you choose after your 12th should be based on your interests and abilities. The amount of passion and hard work you pour in pursuing a particular profession is what will determine how you will be rewarded financially.
Find information on a great many career avenues that are most suited for your personality and aptitude. Narrow down your search and shortlist 2/3 career options if you are not completely sure of what field to pursue. Research on the universities or colleges that offer these courses. Find out about admission procedure for these courses. Check if you have to appear for entrance tests before admissions and if so start preparing for them.
